Winter Carnival in McCall

Winter Carnival is rapidly approaching, bringing an estimated 60,000 visitors to McCall to view locally, carved snow sculptures displayed throughout downtown. This year’s theme is There’s “Snow” Place Like Home. And, thank goodness it is snowing throughout the week because locals are carving now with judging and awards on Jan. 26. The professionals for Idaho State Snow Sculpting Championships start sculpting Tuesday, January 30 at Depot Park and are judged on Friday Feb. 2.

Snow sculptures are just part of the fun at Winter Carnival. Thousands of people line downtown streets to watch the crazy, fun Mardi Gras Parade; Boise State and University of Idaho fans pack the Manchester Ice and Event Center Friday and Saturday night to watch the Black and Blue Rivalry Hockey Tournament; local dogs participate in the legendary Monster MCPAWS Monster Dog Pull; carnival goers, for the first time, can attend the McCall Ultra Sled Dog Challenge; a roundtrip 237 mile Iditarod qualifier race spanning from McCall to Smith Ferry; and the annual food court is back along with local restaurants and bars featuring special food, drinks and music events.

The carnival kicks off on Friday, January 26 with a fireworks display over Payette Lake and runs through Saturday, Feb. 3. Here is a schedule of some of the events at this year’s Winter Carnival. For a full schedule of live entertainment, music and events go to the McCall Chamber Website.
